Madness| Sanity | Gentrification

20th october 2013 at ANATUM’S ABODE

with
SOPHIE BESSE

An actress and member of an improvisation company called Third Person since 2008, Sophie trained in Cours Florent in Paris (1991-1993) and later in City Lit, London. More recently she became interested in physical theatre and discovered mask work at ‘L’ecole Internationale Jacques Lecoq’ and LISPA (London International School of Performing arts).

In addition Sophie is also a clinician psychologist and, among others, has worked five years in a prison for women in France at Fleury-Merogis.
She is currently tutor assistant at Clean Break’s Miss Spent Programme which offers drama lessons to a population of young women, who are ex-offenders or at risk of offending.

Recently Sophie decided to mix these two passion “Psyche and drama” to create artistic projects and set up a company called psychedelight.

For ‘Open Lectures’ Sophie will be talking about her experience working in prison and answering questions on her multiple practice in relation to the theme of Mental Health and artistic practices.

ANDRE VERISSIMO

My practice as an artist is reflected through Performance Art and Puppetry.
I am currently working on a long term project, M.S.G. (Madness, Sanity and Gentrification), that explores the meanings and potentials of sanity and madness through performance.
Taking as a departure point the subjectivity of these concepts, investigate ways of questioning, challenging and transcend established social norms and notions of acceptable/non- acceptable, legal/illegal, ethical/unethical behaviour.
Its also looking at how performance art can serve both as a form of expression and communication, and of maintaining mental balance on an individual and collective levels.

In the Open Lectures I will be presenting some of the work and ideas behind the project, in particular in relation to a recent workshop I facilitated that focused on these ideas and performance in public spaces.

Can acts of attempted madness and weirdness through performance work towards mental balance and a ‘sane’ psyche?

CONSCIOUS ACT FOR TIME

IMG_1070

petja ivanova is a multidisciplinary artist who is part of the board of HIAS health in the arts engaging herself in processbased realisations of how to improve quality time, making it come about poetically and nourishing for oneself and others.

She is handeling everyday life by incooperating fine tuning, aiming to allow a process unfold its beauty. Her methods range from the very conceptual to the logically applied.

Personal accounts on time, friendship and the possible meaning of art are here to follow:

i am preparing for the winter. the last time i did this with my cousins in the garage of my grandfather. we took a camping table and sat around it – peeling garlic, cutting carrots. we did it with our hands, we had a cup of beer and enjoyed each others company. when we filled the big jars with vinegar and water, my cousins boyfriend came along to close the lids. that was a masculine job. then my other cousins son brought some bread, sausage and home made paprika preserve, and we had dinner. our gathering for preservation purposes expanded. before we were done turning the jars up and down, my boyfriend and his friend returned from a field trip. the preservation turned into a hang out with friends. friendship. Aristotel described friendship as not feeling time passing when you are together. I can relate to that. with lisa sometimes i felt like floating above ground. it did not matter what time it was. friendship is our ally in the quest to save time from disappearing. and to save time from being wasted by appointments and the pace of the busiest – we have to create situations for friendship. circumstances for friendship are circumstances for satisfaction.

preservation is one strategy/technique to live  with the time that surrounds you. it is opposite to consumerist and divisive time which to some extent is actually a virtual time. like we know the begriff virtuelles wasser – virtuelle zeit ist nicht nur die zeit, die wir I’m internet verbringen weder die zeit die dort durch raum produziert wird. virtual time is physically, outside of you, not happening. virtual time has no reference to your place in the world – geographically and to the spot of the sun. virtual time is a freedom to get into the paradox of choice.

concentration living. what is live. live is basically boring- eating, cleaning. socializing. life is in our everyday action. actually not much is happening outside of it. taking care of one’s everyday (needs) is the best way to live in the present tense. consumerist time though aims at eliminating the everyday – blaming the ordinary to be peasantry. through consumption you have the possibility to experience something exceptional at any time because you’re not bound to real limitations and to necessities. through having the possibility on the exceptional you tend to loose the soulfulness of the returning everyday real. returning activities set your place – stabilize your existence, form rituals, the source of art.

Petja has participated in the HIAS oasis at viennafair this october by sharing methods for the deceleration of time. She had manufactured soap from pigsfat with her relatives in bulgaria and brought the pieces over, sharing them out to smell and feel, take home a piece of goodness – produced with love, time and in community.

SCENT IN YOUR HANDS

transformational realities delivered through design. Lauren Davies from heka lab incooperated absolute aesthetica for the application of hands on scent creation for ‘reigniting a dialogue about our relationship with nature and the materials we use’. the empowerement comes in high value materials such as copper, maple wood and borosilicate glass with herbal ingredients of choice. the desired flavour of the resulting cosmetics bring about the necessity of floral inclusion, making us reach back to nature, pick the given and source its offerings.

alois yang | Hear The World Ending

The musical content in this sound installation reflects the orbits’ timeframe within which asteroids might impact the Earth. The composition will only be complete at the exact moment of collision – in other words, the end of the world.
Each asteroid has been given a sound interpretation according to data from NASA’s Near Earth Object Program.
The position of each sound (asteroid) within the soundscape interprets the relative position between the Earth (the observer), and the asteroid’s orbit, which remain in constant motion through space and time. As the observer moves the projection around in space as an act of “searching,” the interactive star map and the the sounds align to reveal the location of the asteroids in space.

raxil4 and Blanca Regina| solaris beta

Astronomers at Stanford University recorded acoustical pressure waves in the Sun by carefully tracking movements on its surface with the Michelson Doppler Imager on the SOHO spacecraft. Acoustical waves bounce from one side of the Sun to the other in about two hours, causing its surface to oscillate. These sound waves are normally at frequencies too low for the human ear to hear, so the scientists have sped up the waves 42,000 times and compressed 40 days of vibrations into a few seconds…

Using these recordings I created a musical instrument using an old Tascam four-track tape recorder and a three minute looping cassette, by recording the four tracks at different speeds I was able to create differently pitched variations of the original sound and using the volume sliders, pitch and EQ settings I am able to control these tones making a playable version of the original recordings of the Sun.

Blanca Regina will play with live projections and live processed voice and objects

Exploring scales in kontext :

Part Inspired part disillusioned by Pythagorean Harmony Of The Spheres. Our aim is to create a musical performance based on the principals of scale,  harmony, distance, and dissonance.

Involving pre recorded music/sound tuned to personal scales, and accompanied by 2 Wizards and a collection of mobile phones played by wandering friends
Distance is irrelevant!

in 2010 a group for the performative brand l honneur de timur travelled to israel relating clothing to circumstance through somatic procedures upon the given landscape. the residues are speaking human effort and time, bearing the experience. the story is being told through its physical manifestation upon the cloth, through video, words and imagery. the residues from israel are now being deployed for further process. sharing its beauty their purpose at the emporium is recreational and highlights poetically the utility of natural substances within the practice of the arts
